Matching the curl pattern

A convincing afro or curly system is about pattern, not just color. Follic's Afro builds are made with human hair in tighter curl and coil patterns, so the texture, spring and volume match your own rather than sitting as a loose wave. When you order, tell us your pattern — soft curl, tight curl or coil — and send a photo; the free consultation confirms the match before crafting.

The right base for the texture

Curl and coil carry more visual density, which pairs well with durable constructions. A mono or hybrid base handles the fuller look and daily styling, while a lace or hybrid front keeps the hairline natural. Skin bases still work and remain the easiest to attach — the choice comes down to how you'll wear and maintain it.

Keeping the curl

Textured hair likes moisture. Wash gently in cool water, condition mid-lengths to ends (never the base), and let it air-dry on its stand to preserve the pattern. Use light, water-based curl products rather than heavy oils near the base, and refresh curls with a little water rather than heat. Avoid aggressive brushing — a wide-tooth comb or fingers keeps the pattern intact.

Curl tightness & crew-cut length

For a very short afro crew cut, the tightness of the curl you can achieve depends on how much hair length there is to work with. As a guide: a 0.4cm curl needs about 0.5cm of hair length or more; a 0.6cm curl needs roughly 0.8cm or more; and a 0.8cm curl needs about 1.2cm or more. Going shorter than these limits loosens the curl, so if you want the tightest coil at a very short length, keep a touch more length. Not sure? Tell us your target length and curl and we'll confirm what's achievable before crafting.

Ordering an afro system

Afro and curly builds are available across several Follic families and can be cut and styled to your shape before shipping. Add the Afro Curl Perm & Trim at checkout to have it permed and shaped for you. If you're new to systems, the beginner's guide and Starter Pack still apply — the only difference is texture. Send two photos to the free color match and we'll pair pattern and shade together.

Frequently asked

Do you make hair systems for afro and coily hair?+

Yes — our Afro builds use human hair in tighter curl and coil patterns, matched to your texture and shade. Tell us your pattern and send a photo and we confirm the match before crafting.

Which base is best for curly hair?+

Mono and hybrid bases handle the fuller visual density of curl and coil well and hold up to daily styling; a lace or hybrid front keeps the hairline undetectable. Skin bases work too and are the easiest to attach.

How do I stop the curls going frizzy?+

Treat it like natural textured hair: cool water, condition the lengths only, air-dry on a stand, light water-based products and no aggressive brushing. Refresh curls with water rather than heat.
